The Inner Harbor 5K, benefitting It’s About Childhood and Family, is another part of the Syrathon series. The race sets off from the brand new Iron Pier apartments and shops immediately adjacent to the Creekwalk.
The race started on Van Rensselaer Street, weaved around Leavenworth Park, headed to Franklin Square, and finished on West Kirkpatrick, near the entrance of the Inner Harbor Waterfront Park.
It was a cool, windy day—the perfect conditions for me,. The course consisted entirely of city roads and was fast and flat. I set a steady pace from the outset, workingman way up through a field that never completely dispersed. The chest cold that hampered me in Auburn was gone, and I had enough energy to gradually pick up the pace throughout the race. My finishing time, 26:31, was a personal best by over a minute, and I took third in my age group. Fellow Le Moyne employee Alicia Belko took the win.
In addition to a shirt and medal, the organizers provided post race food, chocolate milk, and ice cream (always appreciated!). Age group awards went three deep, and I brought home a small banner as well. This was a pleasant surprise, and made up for missing out on the age group win in the Superhero race.
