The Harvest 5K, held at Emmi’s Farm in Baldwinsville, is part of the Dick’s Sporting Goods Family Fit Series run by the folks at Willow Fitness. In 2019, the race was part of the Lysander Festravaganza; the atmosphere and vendors reminded me of the old Wayland Potato Festival and Bath Christmas in July bike races.
I learned a hard lesson about lining up too far bak in the field during the ARC race and positioned myself to near the head of the field at the start line. The field, which consisted of 76 runners and walkers, fragmented almost immediately. I passes and was passed by a few runners, but most of us raced around the course individually.
And what a course it was! There were a few stretches of asphalt, but most of the course wound through a field showcasing a variety of crops; some of the plants were tall enough to create the effect of running through a maze. The course was flat but damp and grassy; running was easier on the joints, but every cushioned footfall sapped a bit of energy.
I lumbered across the finish line with a time of 28:18, good enough for 16th place, and first place in my age group, though there was only other male between 50-59.
The race featured a shirt, medal, and a $20 gift certificate to Dicks Sporting Goods for winning the age group.
